Aloners from South Korea, portraying urban loneliness is Ranjan's recommendation

ALONERS deals not with urban loneliness so much as it does with solitude, sought by a young woman working at a credit card call center who avowedly distances herself from her immediate social surroundings – her widower-father, a young trainee who is thrust upon her, and her neighbour at the low-rent tenement where she stays alone. The accidental death of her young neighbour under a stack of pornographic magazines and the subsequent arrival of a new tenant cause her to re-evaluate her life…

This impressive debut by Hong Sung-Eun has a remarkable underplayed performance by Jeon Da-eun who plays the lead Jina.

ALONERS (2021, South Korea) is streaming on MUBI.
